Senior Legal Counsel

Supply Ontario is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our expanding legal team. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role will provide strategic, high-level legal advice on complex matters related to commercial contracts, government procurement, intellectual property, and broader commercial law.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our ambitious mandate to transform and modernize public procurement in Ontario.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate high-value, complex commercial contracts to support the organization’s program objectives, ensuring alignment with legal, regulatory, and strategic requirements.
  • Collaborate with procurement and business teams to design and implement commercial frameworks and performance management strategies for the acquisition and delivery of complex goods and services.
  • Support the development of legal tools to assist procurement client groups with effective procurement operations.
  • Provide legal opinions on a variety of contract negation, procurement law, and commercial legal matters, often with time sensitive deadlines.
  • Act as a legal advisor on strategic projects, client initiatives, and policy development, contributing to organizational decision-making and operational planning.
  • Work closely and provide guidance to other lawyers within the legal team.
  • Advise on the interpretation and application of legislation, regulations, and public sector procurement principles, ensuring compliance and mitigating legal risks.
  • Providing advice on governance matters and support to the Chief Legal Officer in connection with the Board of Directors and committees.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of commercial law issues such as intellectual property, confidentiality, privacy, liability, and negotiation strategy to support risk-informed contracting.
  • Identify and assess legal implications in organizational practices and programs, providing practical and forward-looking legal solutions.
  • Oversee and coordinate files as required with external legal counsel.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Juris Doctor (JD), or equivalent law degree. 
  • 10 years of senior experience as legal counsel, with expert knowledge of commercial contract law. 
  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Experience within the political or public service would be considered an asset.
  • Proven analytical and sound judgment skills, with the ability to assess legal risks and develop strategic, practical solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated client service skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively balance operational and legal advice when advising clients.
  • Knowledge of public sector procurement law, contract law, corporate/commercial law, and relevant regulatory frameworks, with a solid understanding of government decision-making processes.
  • Advanced legal research and analysis skills in complex and specialized areas of law, with the ability to manage files independently and exercise leadership within a legal team.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume legal practice, delivering timely, high-quality legal advice under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and problem-solving ability, offering innovative, forward-thinking legal solutions in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Supply Ontario offers a competitive compensation package including benefits and defined benefit pension plan.

The selected candidate will be required to reside and work in Ontario and be legally eligible to work in Canada.

This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement; at the time of posting, this position would require in-office presence 3 days per week, based on current operational requirements.
