Supply Ontario is seeking a results-driven and innovative Manager who will be accountable for managing the design, build, and launching of new data models, architectures, and data pipelines utilizing data engineering standards, design patterns and practices in support of overall section or department strategies.
In this pivotal role, you will be a member of a ground floor initiative ensuring the best possible combination of money spent and value received for Ontarians. Your expertise will play a key role in the delivery of the Data Engineering function, ensuring consistency with Digital and Data department performance measures, standards, and best practices and integration with overall organizational directions.
Key responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the delivery of data solutions to support transformation initiatives outlined in the data strategy.
- Manage the development of robust, scalable, and efficient data pipelines using Azure cloud infrastructure (Azure Data Factory and Databricks Workflows)
- Develop and maintain ETL processes to extract, cleanse, and transform data from diverse sources into standardized formats.
- Manage data warehouses and data lakes, optimizing for storage, retrieval, and processing efficiency.
- Design, develop, and maintain data architectures and data models, ensuring integrity, reliability, and availability.
- Apply best practices for code management, versioning, and deployment using Azure DevOps.
- Manage implementing and maintaining data quality and validation processes to ensure high data accuracy and consistency.
Governance, Planning & Strategy
- Work with the Director or Chief in operational planning, development and reporting on performance metrics, program effectiveness, risks and impacts related to unit, section and department matters.
- Lead and/or participate in projects within the Digital and Data department to represent the unit’s interests in program or service decision making.
- Develop and manage relationships and consultation with stakeholders impacted by unit programs and operations to discuss and clarify program or service-related issues and needs.
- Work in collaboration with cross-functional teams, including analytics, data governance, and business stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver data solutions effectively.
- Translate complex data platform and infrastructure concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Lead the implementation of data governance frameworks to ensure consistency, quality, and reliability.
Team Leadership & People Management
- Lead a data engineering team of between 4–6 employees, developing talent and mentoring across skill sets (e.g., data modelling, pipeline development, MLOps).
- Provide coaching and direction through ambiguity, fostering resilience and clarity in uncertain situations.
- Promote a culture of service excellence, inclusion, and continuous learning.
- Oversee performance management and lead coaching conversations within data engineering team.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, including 1–2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Strong background in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing.
- Expertise in developing distributed, scalable data pipelines and collaborative workflows using Databricks and PySpark.
- Hands-on experience with modern data management toolsets such as SQL Server, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, and Databricks.
- In-depth knowledge of data structures and algorithms, operating systems, systems architecture, and data wrangling using Python, Scala, R, Java, and SQL.
- Proficiency in architectural patterns including dimensional modeling, hub-and-spoke, data vault, and data lakehouse.
- Demonstrated experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation using Git and ARM templates.
- Proven expertise in cloud-based data engineering, particularly with the Azure data platform (Data Lake, Synapse, SQL, ADF).
- Skilled in performance monitoring and optimization for large-scale, cloud-native data solutions.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies and best practices in modern data engineering.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric is an asset.
- Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement; at the time of posting, this position would require in-office presence 3 days per week, based on current operational requirements.
